Rwanda’s largest and Africa’s sixth largest lake extremely good-looking inland water body enclosed by steep, green terraced hills along eastern Rwanda, Lake Kivu stands at a height of
1, 460 meters (4,790 ft) above sea level, 89 km in length and 48 km wide, covering a surface of 2700 km2 at an average depth of 240m with maximum depth at 480m, water volume of 500km3. It stands across the border connecting western Rwanda to the Democratic Republic of Congo and is surrounded by forested hills, with sandy bays and fishing villages. Lake Kivu empties into the Ruzizi River, which flows southwards into Lake Tanganyika. About 58% of the Lake Kivu waters lies inside DR Congo borders, the world’s tenth-largest island on a lake, Idjwi, lies in Lake Kivu, within the boundaries of Virunga National Park. Settlements on the lake’s shore include Bukavu, Kabare, Kalehe, Sake and Goma in Congo, and Gisenyi, Kibuye, and Cyangugu in Rwanda.
Gisenyi, Kibuye and Cyangugu are linked by a wild roller-coaster road that trip up through rich plantain fields and leftover patches of misty tropical forest to offer wide views over the blue waters with the close by Virunga volcanoes providing amazing scenery. Roads to Karongi is paved and in good condition.
Rubavu (Gisenyi) .Rubavu (Gisenyi) is a waterfront town located on the shores of Lake Kivu, a haven for those who seeking a beach retreat after their adventure elsewhere in Rwanda. Located only one hour from Volcanoes National Park, it is filled with exciting nightlife and authentic Rwandan cuisine. While on Lake Kivu, you will enjoy the radiant quality of the sandy beaches which have natural waves that keep pounding upon them and majestic highlands surround the lake which makes the tour even more outstanding filled with incredible sights while you relax and enjoy the refreshing breathe.
Karongi is Located in the western part of Rwanda, Karongi is 110km from Kigali and 5 hours drive from Nyungwe National Park. The drive is an incredible journey full of scenes of the richness of Rwanda’s mother nature and a beehive of activities of the inhabitants of the area. It is one of the best relaxing places in Rwanda, and is an ideal place to enjoy lakeside recreation.
Rusizi(Cyangugu). Located at the southernmost end of the lake, Cyangugu is a pretty run down port town with a few faded colonial buildings that has grown up around the border crossing into Congo. While staying here you can almost cross into Congo by a single jump through your bedroom window. This is how close it is from the border so you can imagine the view you will have while there.
WHAT TO DO &SEE
Amahoro Island (Karongi) is accessible on a boat trip and is a wonderful place to relax. There is a restaurant on the island and it’s possible to swim, play volleyball and camp, or talk a walk around the rocky northern part of the island.
Napoleon Island named because it has the shape of Napoleon’s hat. The island is home to a large colony of bats which a short climb brings you face-to-face with them.
From crop to cup experience The high mountains, cool climate and rich volcanic soil result in the award winning quality of the Rwanda’s coffee and tea. Experience the growing and production process at one of the many plantations found in the Karongi or Rubavu region. Visit the nursery to see the small saplings and then watch as the expert plantation workers delicately prune, pick, wash and dry the leaves and berries. After you’ve seen the hard work and skill that goes into coffee and tea production, sit down and enjoy a tasting of tantalizing blends.
Kayaking : Travel peacefully along the spectacular coast of one of Africa’s Rift Valley’s Great Lakes. Using modern and very stable sea kayaks that are designed for touring, guided tours from both Rubavu (Gisenyi) and Karongi (Kibuye) as well as four-day journeys between these lakeshore towns are available.
Swimming in Lake Kivu There are many beautiful lakes in East and Central Africa but most you cannot swim in. Lake Kivu is not only a lake where you can relax and chill out, but you can swim in the Lake. There is no danger from hippos, crocodiles or even Bilharzia, take a dip in the lake and enjoy a refreshing swim in Lake Kivu
The Congo Nile Trail is a trail along Lake Kivu that extends from Rubavu, continues through Rutsiro via the Karongi and Nyamasheke districts and ends at Rusizi District. 227 km (141 miles) of beautiful landscapes, including rolling hills and clear water, the entire trek can be completed in a 10 day hike. However, the trip can be done in sections if travelers do not have the time to complete the entire trail. Trails give stunning views of the Lake Kivu coastline and offer adventurous travelers an exciting way to discover Rwanda.
Try Sambaza in Rubavu or Karongi a local delicacy of fried sardines; is freshest here. Enjoy while you watch the fishermen on the lake, and head down to the port at sunset to catch the fishermen singing their songs.
